Victory in Europe Day 2025

The 8th May marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day – the day peace was declared and the Second World War in Europe came to an end. It was a day of celebration, relief and thankfulness after years of fear, suffering and uncertainty. For many, it was a day that brought hope and relief.

VE Day reminds us of the courage and selflessness shown by those who gave up so much to protect others. Their actions were not easy or comfortable, but they were motivated by something bigger than themselves. Jesus described this kind of love when He said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13).

For Christians, this verse points to the love of Jesus himself. His death on the cross was the greatest example of sacrifice, made so that we could be bought into a true union with God. On this anniversary, we give thanks for those who gave their lives and especially remember the lasting hope and peace that comes from God through his son Jesus Christ.

At Westoning Baptist Church, our morning service on the 4th May will include a short children’s talk and each child will receive a special VE day present.
