The truth made known

Having a translation app on a smart phone is very useful when going abroad on holiday. Scan the foreign menu and the English words magically appear on the screen. So much easier than trying to leaf through a pocket dictionary!

500 years ago this month, a man called William Tyndale first translated the bible into English from the original Hebrew and Greek. This was the beginning of an exciting chapter in the history of our country. For the first time, uneducated people were able to understand the Bible rather than it being read to them in Latin. This encouraged literacy, reading and the growth of schools.

The English Bible also made clear the truth about Jesus and how He is the only way to Heaven. People were also challenged to think and pray for themselves. Proverbs chapter 16 verse 22 tells us ‘Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it’.
